Do I still need to create a Home partition?

I'm coming back to Ubuntu after being away for just over a year (Windows 7). Do I still need to create a separate 'home' partition to protect all my files during future Ubuntu version upgrades? ie 12.10 to 13.04

That does not "protect" your files during an upgrade in the real meaning of the word. It helps during CLEAN INSTALL, not upgrade. It gives you the option to make a clean install of another version formatting the / partition while keeping the /home partition.

I guess that is what you asked, so yes, you still need to make it as separate partition if you want to do clean installs and keep the home folders intact.

Some people do, some don't. I use a different backup plan, but separate home is a good idea.

Edit: oops, thought that was a good idea

I heard rumours that future Ubuntu releases will become 'rolling' releases rather than 6 month dev cycles, so does that mean we'll all be 'updating' future installations rather than clean installs?

I don't know, haven't read anything like that. At the moment, the latest LTS is still 12.04 LTS and there is one planned two years later, 14.04 LTS. There are still releases in between, every 6 months. The 13.04 is due in April.

They wouldn't be releasing 13.04 if you only need to do apt-get upgrade I guess.

From what I read, 13.04 will mark the start of the rolling release with 9 months of support.

All I can see is that 13.04 will really be supported only 9 months, until Jan 2014, but the release schedule for 13.10 (Oct 2013) and 14.04 (April 2014) remain. That doesn't sound like rolling releases where you only update one into the other.
