Question Software update messes up Ubuntu 12.10

    Hello all,

I've been skipping the automatic update for quite some time because every time I update it, it reboots and then all I got is the purple background and it sits there after loading the Ubuntu logo. I never get the login screen.

I use Windows 7. Ubuntu 12.10 is installed on VMware Workstation Version 9.0.0 build-812388

I took a snapshot in VMware that I can easily go back to. But I think I should be able to keep my Ubuntu system updated, right?

    Any ideas? Suggestions?

    Thanks in advance,

    --Nelson.

First thing to try is nomodeset (usually for older computers)
