How do I extract a .pkg file

Trying to download something from Microsoft's Dreamspark service (gives free software to students), but you need to get their download manager first, which comes in a .pkg file. Tried file filepath/filename.pkg, output is "/home/moneyperson/Downloads/SDM.pkg: xar archive - version 1," tried both the default archive manager and xarchiver, neither work.

See http://stackoverflow.com/questions/1...files-in-linux for information. You might try doing a search on eith .pkg or on xar, that might provide some information. As far as I know, though, .pkg is primarily for Mac OS, not Linux.
