    Can't change the date

I'm running Ubuntu 12.04. When I try to use the Time & Date control panel to change the date backwards, it just immediately springs back to whatever the real date is.

I've got it set to "manual" now.

How can I change the date backwards? I'd really like to set it to the correct date minus one year.
I try to treat the cause, not the symptom. I avoid the terminal in instructions, unless it's easier or necessary. My instructions will work within the Ubuntu system, instead of breaking or subverting it. Those are the three guarantees to the helpee.

Suggestion: Go to Systems Settings, Date and Time, and turn off "Network Time".

"Set the time:" is set to "Manually" already. If I selected "Automatically from the Internet" then the time and date fields wouldn't unlock.

    Any other suggestions?
