    Bitcoin, Ubuntu 12.04 anybody?

I thought I would have a look at Bitcoin to see what it was etc. I am finding (I think) that it (bitcoin-qt, vers 0.8.0 beta) is not running well on Ubuntu 12.04, although as a beginner I am not quite sure what to expect. And also, possible problems with the network of external users complicate things too. Is anyone here a successful regular user, with 12.04? any advice please?

Its not running well? What is the problem?

You mean your internet connection is slow? It should be ok I would think, if its slow then it will just take longer for things to transfer. If its too slow it won't connect and then you'll know.

I downloaded the bitcoin-qt and made a launcher using the "Main Menu" program, it lets you make launchers with a name icon and all and it seems to be working fine.
I haven't tried the repository yet.

What is it not doing ?

Bitocin the application doesnt do anything on its own, if you are mining then I presume you have powerful GPU's and preferably more than one, or if not then you just have the wallet which holds your bitcoins should you buy some or mine them or scavenge them online.

Well, it is really only the first people to get into a Ponzi scheme that make money, the rest are all losers. At this stage of the game, you can only do Bitcoin mining with specialized, expensive hardware. Even GPU based systems do not work anymore.

    Ponzi scheme ?

You dont need to mine to get bitcoins, you can also buy them and trade them back, they are now around $33 per bitcoin, they were around $5 at one point. I booked a new holiday 2 weeks ago thanks to the rise.

    You can also scavenge them.

It is not a scheme, it is a digital currency, use it how you will.

yes, AMD was always preferred anyways.

But people tend to use specialist devices these days https://en.bitcoin.it/wiki/Mining_hardware_comparison

Unless you are running a server farm it is near pointless using one machine or GPU to generate bitcoins now though.

Ah, OK. My machine has humble on board graphcs reports as
Intel Corporation 4 Series Chipset Integrated Graphics Controller (rev 03)
But I am really curious to have a go, in a pool or something. I have better hardware soon, but it would be good to have a grasp of the process on my existing hw.
