    I did look at those and wish I could have, pretty sweet looking systems. They were just a bit beyond my budget that I needed to set. Hopefully, I can get one in the future.

    My HP Pavillion works pretty good, still haven't gone through EVERYTHING yet, but aside from a first boot hiccup, I'm quite satisfied.... optimus chip aside...

    See my signature. Works VERY nicely, with Kubuntu 12.04.1 AMD64, and kernel 3.2.0-38, and KDE currently on 4.10.00.
    Proprietary realtek WLAN driver is needed though.

    I realize this is an old thread but found this post by "Evilkitty" regarding Asus a54 backlight behavior:

    to fix backlight behavior o the new BIOS after the 3.6.11 kernel you need to add this kernel boot parameter:
    acpi_osi="!Windows 2012"

    a modern linux system will use grub2, so you will want to edit this file:
    /etc/default/grub
    you will see a line that starts with this
    GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT=
    if you have something special in here (you know who you are) you will need to edit the next line
    i changed that entire line to this:
    GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT='quite splash acpi_osi="!Windows 2012"'

    before:
    GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT="quite splash"
    after:
    GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT='quite splash acpi_osi="!Windows 2012"'

    then run sudo update-grub and then boot the new kernel and enjoy the back-light acting like it used to
    I have only tested the 3.9.0-030900rc6-generic kernel but it should work on the other affected kernels

    here is the bug report where i got this fix
    bugzilla.kernel.org/show_bug.cgi?id=55161
