I think it's tg3. Confirm:
syslog says it see's the card and uses tga.
What, if anything, resides in /etc/network/interfaces? I suggest, at a minimum:
sudo lshw -C network
Then get the system to re-read the file:
iface lo inet loopback
iface eth0 inet dhcp
iface eth1 inet dhcp
This assumes the ethernet cable is attached to eth0. You should be able to see in lshw which interface has the cable with 'link detected.'
sudo ifdown eth0 && sudo ifup -v eth0
It should be clear if you connected or not and give some clues to troubleshoot if you did not. Confirm:
ping -c3 www.google.com
