Ubuntu frezees at computer start with Desktop on

    Hi All,

I have a problem when starting Ubuntu(version 10.04). I get to the Desktop where the background, icons and an empty document viewer are visible. However all the panels are greyed out and the computer does not respond to any mouse clicks.
Ubuntu worked great for several months and the problem seemed to appear when my laptop shut down after the battery ran out of power.
I tried to start in the different recovery modes from the startup menu but without any positive results.
I also tried to exit to the text mode but I am not able to login with the root password.

Any ideas what I can do to fix the problem?
Are there any recovery CDs for Ubuntu?

    Many thanks in Advance

As always with 10.04-problems: Go for a clean install of 12.04 or 12.10.
10.04 is soon to run out of support anyway.

    Thanks for your reply morgæs.
I considered the upgrade to 12.04 but for various reasons , I would like to be able to start again with the 10.04 version and save some of the settings plus the list of the installed programs.
Do you happen to know how to fix my existing problem?

    Cheers
