12.04 LTS, Toshiba Satellite L850, RTL8111/RTL8168 WiFi non existent.

    Hi there,

Just got this second hand laptop minus Windows. Installed Ubuntu 12:04. Everything seems fine except for Wifi. I can connect via cable though. I looked through the forums/posts but can't find anything specific (or that I can handle - I am quite new... even though I've been using Ubuntu for the past few years. I try to avoid the terminal as it is too scary for me).
Any suggestions that I could follow? I gather it has to do with a driver. I followed this link: http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.p...t=Realtek+8111
but got stuck at pt3 --> ACCESS DENIED!
Point 1 and 2 matched perfectly.
    Thank you for your help.

Re: 12:04 LTS, Toshiba Satellite L850, RTL8111/RTL8168 WiFi non existent. HELP

Hmmmm. We see a slight inconsistency here. You said:
Everything seems fine except for Wifi.
However, the link you gave us says:
This is guidance for those with integrated Realtek RTL8111 series gigabit Ethernet
    Ethernet is not wireless.

I have been trying to figure out how to find out about your wireless without the terminal and I'm stumped, so let's try it anyway. We will list your PCI devices and trim the list down to code 0280, which is wireless:
    Code:
    lspci -nn | grep 0280
The pipe symbol | is on the right side of my US keyboard on the same key with \.

Post the result and we'll proceed.

    Thank you so much chili555.
Sorry for the delay in replying, I didn't see your reply come in! Well, not suprised about the unconsistency. I tried to find something, somewhere on the forums that would avoid me annoying people. I obviously failed
Here is (I hope) what you asked me to do:
08:00.0 Network controller [0280]: Realtek Semiconductor Co., Ltd. RTL8188CE 802.11b/g/n WiFi Adapter [10ec:8176] (rev 01)

Thank you again for your help.

Realtek Semiconductor Co., Ltd. RTL8188CE 802.11b/g/n WiFi Adapter [10ec:8176]
Your device is covered by the module (not surprisingly) rtl8192ce. It is built in to 12.10 by default. I think, if you don't wish to upgrade, it exists in linux-backports-modules-cw. Hook up the ethernet and do:
    Code:
    sudo apt-get install linux-backports-modules-cw-3.6-precise-generic
    sudo modprobe rtl892ce
    Is it working now?

    Found linux image: /boot/vmlinuz-3.5.0-25-generic
What...?? Although your original post says you installed 12.04, you evidently have the 12.10 kernel installed which has rtl8192ce built in by default. Is there any reason you are not booting into 3.5.0-25? Can you reboot, interrupt the boot process with Shift, select 3.5.0-25 and be off and running?

Ahahahahaha, OK... what you are telling me could as well be in Chinese! I see words such as "kernel" and haven't got a clue about what they mean. I recall that there was a "kernel" update coming through yesterday or the day before and because I don't know what I'm doing I installed it - or more like: I let it install itself! So glad there is people like you around to help. OK... deep breath and will do as you suggest. Back soon if I don't stuff up everything.

OK... no 3.5.0-25 to be seen!
    Just 3.5.0-26 generic.

That's fine; please select it and let the boot process continue. If your wireless doesn't start automagically, instead of this:
    tristan@tristan-Satellite-L850:~$ sudo modprobe rtl892ce
    Do this:
    Code:
    sudo modprobe rtl8192ce
Many thanks to my pal Hadaka!

ermmmmmm... thank you so much for your patience.

    Did this:
    tristan@tristan-Satellite-L850:~$ sudo modprobe rtl8192ce
    [sudo] password for tristan:
    tristan@tristan-Satellite-L850:~$ sudo modprobe rtl8192ce
    tristan@tristan-Satellite-L850:~$

Still no wireless options! Should I reboot? Oh, and what is the "key" to press to bring the terminal without having to the "dash" to fetch it?
