Confused by what I nee to do to try Ubuntu

I'm a beginner, obviously. I used the windows installer for 12.10, and I managed to activate my wireless card, but I really want to play World of Warcraft on this Linux partition of my drive. I tried installing Wine, but I believe that I'm missing some dependencies. Heck, I can't even find the data from my windows partition if I'm not logged into it. I've gotten as far as using an external with Warcraft after getting wine an running winecfg, but it hangs on the update, an I'm very lost. What should my next step be?

What is the point of running WOW in wine? When you are not even using a real installation of Ubuntu?

Well, yes. I'm brand new to Ubuntu, I wanted to start using it for my everyday stuff so I could get used to it. It is training pants, and I'm not even sure what WUBI means...

I tired installing and running wow.exe in wine, but while it does launch, it gets stuck on the 'updating blizzard launcher' thing and eventually just closes itself. I'm not sure why.

Not really. Wubi is a perfectly good way of installing Ubuntu. Apart from the slightly different installer it functions almost exactly the same as a traditional install.

Generally you'll find Windows games work best in Windows, so if you've got Windows available then that's the easiest thing to do. Wine can be a bit of a mission to get set up right.

Having said that, I'm told WoW does work well in Wine, so you should be able to play it. I'd suggest installing Playonlinux (it's in the repositories, just open up Software Centre and install it). Use Playonlinux to install WoW, as it handles any little tweaks the game might need to run properly.

tehcnically you could, but you would still need to install it in wine. wine is an API layer. it's alsmot like having windows installed but then again not really...
