    Question Software update messes up Ubuntu 12.10

    Hello all,


    I've been skipping the automatic update for quite some time because every time I update it, it reboots and then all I got is the purple background and it sits there after loading the Ubuntu logo. I never get the login screen.


    I use Windows 7. Ubuntu 12.10 is installed on VMware Workstation Version 9.0.0 build-812388


    I took a snapshot in VMware that I can easily go back to. But I think I should be able to keep my Ubuntu system updated, right?


    Any ideas? Suggestions?

    First thing to try is nomodeset (usually for older computers)

    Second guess is your video driver needs to be reinstalled
