Sounds like the printer drive is messed up. Have you tried uninstalling and reinstalling the printer?

You could also try booting from a livecd and trying to print to see if the problem persists.

If so, I'd say it's a driver issue.

What version of Ubuntu are you using? Do you know how the driver was installed?
