I would suggest this, and I'm not trying to be a pain, Pilot6. There are many things that can be done, and there are easy ways to do things.

Reboot. That will have you at ATI's 12.4 driver.
Then we can use CCC to adjust performance.

The problem is that if you install driver strait using official installer, after kernel is updated, you will need to reinstall it again.
is backwards.
If installed through apt, when the kernel is installed the driver will be recompiled back into the kernel automatically.
