You can just download the install CD for Ubuntu and boot from that. It will allow you to install Ubuntu and erase the entire harddisk.
If you have files that you want to save from your Windows installation (like documents) you can also first use the Ubuntu Live CD to boot into a fully working version of Ubuntu. From this live session you can access the files on your Windows partition.
I downloaded Ubuntu - desktop but it won't burn to a CD "file too large"
You need either a DVD or a USB stick.
Cheesemill
Downloaded onto a different computer copied the i386.iso file onto a stick. The "old Gateway" bypasses the stick and goes to boot up XP. I don't have the XP disks or the proper password to complete the XP boot. What next?
Go into BIOS and set the Priority order to boot from USB first - and from there directly into a live session to get your files, etc ...
EDIT: You have to 'burn' the .iso onto your USB, not just manually copy them.
On a m$ machine you can use this

Don't try to install Ubuntu on this one. Lubuntu and Xubuntu are better choices (and their ISOs fit on a CD).

Don't use this space for a list of your hardware. It only creates false hits in the search engines.
Eventually want to setup Home Theater / Home automation. Which flavor should I use?
Thank you for your replies.
Better to wait with these considerations until you have a working Buntu running.
