Fan Problem

Ubuntu 10.04
Dell Dimension B110
Over the last year doing updates regularly have noted that with
one release the computer fan would go from normal speed to a high
whirring speed then settle down. The very next release the fan
would go to normal speed and this would alternate with releases.
On the current update the fan does not work.
Is there a way to start the fan?

Yes, but reluctant to try due to its age.
Maybe some newer solution.

I used it recently on my Ubuntu 10.04. It should still work. I know of no other solution.
