It's really not that old. If it works why fix it? That being said it obviously doesn't work for you. There are plenty of distros out there that come with 3.5+ just use one of those. It's easy enough to install mate on most distros that you really don't need a mate specific distro. Just read http://wiki.mate-desktop.org/download and it has directions how to install on most distros. Heck maybe you can even try the free bsd version of debian?
