Point Linux, the new Debian + MATE distro

    Good day everyone!

I'd like to announce that Point Linux 13.02, the new Debian + MATE distro is out!

Point Linux is based on Debian 'Wheezy' 7.0 and MATE 1.4.2. It aims to reproduce the Gnome 2 look and feel and it's usability. There are two editions of Point Linux, the full edition comes with Firefox 17.0.1, Thunderbird 17.0.2, LibreOffice, VLC, Transmission, Pidgin, Brasero and non-free firmware. The core version doesn't include these apps and firmware but it fits on a CD, yet you can always upgrade the core edition to full installing 'pointlinux-mate-desktop' metapackage.

You can easily add the non-free Google Chrome, Opera, Dropbox and Virtualbox repos installing the 'pointlinux-repos-nonfree' package and updating package lists.

This version of Point Linux has a text-based 'Debian way' installer. It's preseeded so the overall installation is simplified. If needed, the installer localizes your system during the installation downloading the necessary language packages.

Visit Point Linux web site for more information and screenshots

I ran it briefly from USB (using Unetbootin) - very impressed, found & connected to my Broadcom wireless with two clicks.

Not sure though between Fuduntu (started from a Fedora base) and PointLinux (Debian based) - both have very similar appearance/apps. But, I'm not experienced enough to comment on what's 'under the hood'.

Well, Fuduntu uses Gnome 2.32 and hosts its own repositories. Point runs MATE and it looks like it runs its own repos.

Thanks for that explanation - I think it's really down to me to see how I get on with each of them in my normal usage. The plus side of Linux - so much choice. My downside - so many choices!! Thinking dual boot for a while!

Thank you for posting this. I'm definitely feeling the pressure of the EOL for Lucid creeping up from behind, so have been actively seeking out MATE desktop distros. This looks like it could be a replacement for BeOS Ubuntu for those not interested in Canonical's focus shift to BeIA Unity.

Will download this and test it out soon.
