I think that you will need to repair the windows boot files, then probably reinstall grub into the mbr of your drive.

Sorry I do not run win7 or 8 so I can't be much help with fixing there.
Thank you for your reply, does this ring any bells for you Bufeu?

@arpanaut at one point when I was first trying to get grub to work I selected sda1. I dont remember exactly which command I was using at this point. So it was probably me who messed it up =(.. Anyways, what your saying is, sda1 is supposed to be windows boot files not grub??

    Try fixmbr: http://ubuntuforums.org/showpost.php...94&postcount=5
Should work. To install GRUB again, please do it from a live-CD/USB this time (not with boot repair).
    Code:
    grub-install /dev/sda1
(or wherever you want GRUB to be installed)

Yes, grub is generally installed into the root of the drive i.e. sda, not into a partition.
I have seen many of the pastebin entries and what is shown in yours is not what I see for most win7 installations, hence my suggestion for repairing the windows boot files, I do believe this can be done with the win installation disk or some rescue or repair disks, but I don't know the details.
Hopefully someone who does will hit this thread and offer assistance.

Ok so just making sure I understand this correct... The commands that are being put in (in the link you provided) are ran from the terminal I would get to by using a win7 install/repair disk?

Ok, thank you. Now I just need to get a hold of a win7 disk.

Thank you in advance if I get this working. And if anyone else has input on this I will really appreciate it.

Re: I can't boot windows after installing ubuntu

You somehow installed grub1 (not even grub2) on the partition where the win7 boot files are, sda1:
    Code:
    sda1: __________________________________________________________________________

        File system:
        Boot sector type: Grub Legacy
Boot sector info: Grub Legacy (v0.97) is installed in the boot sector
of sda1 and looks at sector 1878595584 of the same
hard drive for the stage2 file. A stage2 file is at
this location on /dev/sda. Stage2 looks on partition
                           #5 for /boot/grub/menu.lst.
Mounting failed: mount: unknown filesystem type ''
Use this procedure either from the installed ubuntu or from live mode to restore the backup boot sector of sda1:
    http://sourceforge.net/apps/mediawik...ms:Boot_Sector

PS. Yes, you can also use the win7 repair process if you have the dvd or a rescue cd. But note that that will delete grub2 from the MBR also, so you will have to restore that too.

And related to earlier command mentioned grub-install /dev/sda1, NEVER, ever install grub2 to a partition (and /dev/sda1 is a partition). You need it on a partition only in special cases, very rare. The boot process starts on the hdd MBR and that's where a bootloader needs to be, not on a partition.

Ah, so grub-install /dev/hda would be the right command?
