cups network server recognised, test page ok BUT..

So, i am at my university (IT guy not here..) where we have this printing server set up for the various printers in the building. I have recently installed ubuntu 12.04. So, the applet for printing has very few features, one of them being to connect to a printing server by typing the address in a box. I do that and all the printers do come up on the list (of the applet). I can print a test page from there. But when i try to print any document no printer appears (on the printing menu). Also if I close the printer config applet next time i open it it has forgotten about the server and i need to re-type it. Help?
