Question Acer Aspire V5-573G: X does't start: No screens found

    Hi,

I just bought an Acer Aspire V5-573G with core i5-4200U and NVidia GeForce GT 750M and I'm trying to get ubuntu running. I already solved one problem: When starting the liveusb system I got "fb: conflicting fb hw usage inteldrmfb vs EFI VGA - removing generic driver". This could be solved by setting "nomodeset". This way I managed to install Ubuntu.

When starting from the hard drive (also using nomodeset) the graphical interface doesn't work, the last message I see is "init hw failure, initialization failed", but at least I can login at the terminal. When trying to execute startx manually, I get "no screens found":

This is what `lspci -v | perl -ne '/VGA/../^$/ and /VGA|Kern/ and print'` prints out:
    Code:
00:02.0 VGA compatible controller: Intel Corporation Haswell-ULT Integrated Graphics Controller (rev 09) (prog-if 00 [VGA controller])
So ubuntu only recognizes the intel graphics but not the nvidia one (therefore I didn't try to use bumblebee yet). This isn't a problem for me, as I don't need the NVidia card on linux, intel hd graphics is enough.

Could you help me getting the intel graphics to work? The installer somehow managed to use it, so it has to be possible somehow, but after a lot of time trying it out by myself I've no idea how to proceed

    Thank you in advance,

The VESA driver doesn't seem to like your GPU. Anyway, you would be far better off using Ubuntu 13.10 for such a new system.

Re: Acer Aspire V5-573G: X does't start: No screens found

    Hi,

I just tried out 13.10 and it works great (NVidia isn't recognised, but for me this isn't important as the Intel graphics is fast enough)! Just one small thing: After booting the screen is always totally black, so I always have to brighten it up using the keyboard. Is there a way to do this automatically?

Re: Acer Aspire V5-573G: X does't start: No screens found

I also have an Aspire V5-573G 54208g50aii and thought I'd share what I've found: running Saucy 13.10 beta, everything works except the Nvidia 750m, bluetooth, and screen brightness on startup. I've tried using bumblebee, which doesn't recognise the Nvidia card, but if I've understood the thread at https://bugzilla.kernel.org/show_bug.cgi?id=60829 correctly, there will be a fix in kernel 3.12. The bluetooth problem relates to a known bug (https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+s...h/+bug/1148033) for which there is a partial workaround. I haven't yet tried the script in post #4 (thanks vladimir2!) but will do so - at the moment, I'm just pressing fn-right on startup. Does anyone know why the brightness control might not be working by default?
