Asus ux31a LCD brightness no longer works

Hi all, I am currently running Mint 14 with gnome classic. Initially I was able to change the brightness through "All Settings > Brightness and Lock" though now I am unable: moving the slider does not do anything.

I was tinkering around with trying some of the workarounds, and none seemed to work, which is fine. But now (I'm not sure what I did) I cannot change the brightness at all.

Any help and troubleshooting with the issue would be greatly appreciated by both my battery life and my eyes.

I've got hardened 3.7.5 gentoo kernel but same thing.
