Bingo, try using X-Chat in unity, god damn pain, you have to install a seperate "indicator" that doesn't actually work (yes i've submitted the bug report which is going ignored) you minimize to tray, click the indicator in the message menu...and a new instance opens not the current one...*sigh*. So I now use Cinnamon since it has a proper tray Unity is a real pain to actually work with.
