    I have a streaming media software I use for Windows - tar.gz

I have never got the hang of where to install apps for tar.gz's. I have uncompressed it but as for where to install it I have NO idea. Can you assist. Serviio is an amazing software that streams media to my xbox360 and I would recomend to anyone. Also just get confused living on 400mg morphine a day, that really messes up you brain. Hope you can assist

You don't just"install" it. You've chosen the hardest and most error-prone way to acquire software -- building the executable from source. You will have to download LOTS of stuff before you can even begin to make the program.

A much better approach is to use the Repositories that are utilized by the Software Center. Did you search there first?
Ubuntu 15.04 Mate, Mint 17.1; MS Win 8.1, Win10 TP.
Will not respond to PM requests for support -- use the forums.

If you just want to stream to DLNA-enabled devices, the minidlna program in the repositories is easy to configure and works well.

I searched for a while and I didn't see anything that fitted the bill. But I always miss things with my stupid brain. So will have a go at the programs you have kindly mentioned. Many thanks for your time

Plex-mediaserver is also very good; not open-source, but it is free to download and use. https://plex.tv/downloads

I use it a great deal to stream photos, music and movies from my desktop to my old TV with a smart-TV set-top box; brilliant!
