Just plug in the cable from the computer to your router.

If your network card is supported it will just work.

If you are having problems can you provide us with more details please, type of network card, the setup of your internet connection etc...

Ubuntu 10.04 is two and a half years old. If you are new to Linux you should be starting with a later version. 12.04 or 12.10 will be fine.

They are also almost guaranteed to support your network card. Whereas 10.04 can only support network cards from 2010 and earlier.
I try to treat the cause, not the symptom. I avoid the terminal in instructions, unless it's easier or necessary. My instructions will work within the Ubuntu system, instead of breaking or subverting it. Those are the three guarantees to the helpee.

Try using Ubuntu 12.04 or 12.10 (that last one if you don't mind upgrading every 6 months). 10.04 is almost end of live, so it's better not to start using it any more. If you wish, you can try them from a live disk and see whether your internet connection works.

if you insist on 10.04 you can try one of the backported kernels, but if you go higher than the maverick backport you will loose virtualbox, you can find the package in synaptic
