Unity: dragging launcher icon from/to desktop

If I have a launcher icon on my desktop it is easy to just drag it to the launcher bar with my mouse. However, it seems to be impossible to drag an icon from the launcher bar to the desktop. Why on earth is that? It seems extremely counter-intuitive and user-unfriendly!

I have tried to use Unity several times in the past and always given up on it, but since XFCE does have its own problems and bugs lately I am feel I am forced to use Unity, although I find it still very frustrating, limiting and unnecessarily forcing a new and wastly inferior way to interact down my throat.

You can drag the icon launcher from the dash to your desktop.
