    12.04 LTS vs. WinXP

After talking about it for years, I finally decided to switch from Windows to Linux as my main desktop opsys. I went with Ubuntu 12.04 LTS and I have been using it for about six months. I am over much of the initial learning curve and just did a fresh reinstall.

I run an ole but reliable HP DC7100 CMT with a Pentium 4 3.4 gHz CPU and 512 meg of RAM (see http://h20000.www2.hp.com/bizsupport...title_r0001#A0 for details).

I use the generic video driver and the latest version fixes some problems I had.

The thing is, I do dual boot WinXP and Ubuntu is sooo much slower. Just comparing the response time of the Dash vs. the Start button but all program loads are so much slower in Ubuntu.

Why? Is it me? Does anyone else experience this?

But I ain't going back to Microsoft, no way.

Without installing the new stuff first, try to login into the Ubuntu 2D session.

Yes, it is possible the new Unity is more demanding and the combination of your current video driver + HW is not enough.

As suggested above, if that does not help, try to install XFCE as the desktop manager and see what happens. It is probably the most lightweight solution these days.

BTW, are those operating systems residing on the same physical HDD?

You could try a faster distro? Ubuntu does not have a reputation as a fast OS.

Or simply update your hardware (pentium 4 with 512mb ram is quite low-spec by 2013 standards), the permanent and foolproof solution.

Well, the Dash is definitely slower than it needs to be. I'll make no pretenses about that. The good news is, its speed is being worked on for 13.04 and 13.10.

Also, take into account that the Dash isn't "just" a Start menu. It's a multi-search engine too.

Ubuntu has never been billed as a "lightweight" operating system; although you can use it on some old low-end PCs it really runs best on something more modern. The Dash is fairly snappy and responsive on my Core 2 Duo machine.

And finally, take into account that Windows XP is about twelve years old; by its very nature it will be less demanding than a full-featured desktop operating system from last year.
I try to treat the cause, not the symptom. I avoid the terminal in instructions, unless it's easier or necessary. My instructions will work within the Ubuntu system, instead of breaking or subverting it. Those are the three guarantees to the helpee.

IMHO the CPU is fine but the RAM is woefully inadequate!

Stick another 2GB of RAM in it and you should see a great improvement.

    Re: 12.04 LTS vs. WinXP

just use Xubuntu or Lubuntu and it will be much faster than windows XP or about as fast. more ram in your maschine would be good. but i run Xubuntu on 512MB in wvirtual box inside winXP and it seems to be quite fast.
Read the easy to understand, lots of pics Ubuntu manual.
Do i need antivirus/firewall in linux?
Full disk backup (newer kernel -> suitable for newer PC): Clonezilla
User friendly full disk backup: Rescuezilla
