I updated Ubuntu (12.10) using the Software updater, and since it was finished and prompted me to restart my computer, I don't have sound. Sound Settings only shows "Dummy Output" rather than headphones/stereo/etc like it used to.

What does your 'sound settings' say? Check if it is muted.
Otherwise uninstall and reinstall 'pulseaudio'. You can do it with Software Center or Synaptic pkg magager.
