I'm really disappointed with 12.10... I never imagined that Canonical has become a business like Facebook... You're wrong... I'm going to Debian or Feedora, sorry.

Try Xubuntu or a different desktop environment. There are a zillion combinations beyond 'Ubuntu 12.10 bog standard'. You can switch off or uninstall what you don't like.

Install Cinnamon GUI, you wont have to deal with Canonical's intrusive stuff.

Canonical has been a business since the beginning, and Ubuntu has never made a secret of being a commercial distribution that is free to use. Canonical has been selling merchandise, support and software since 2005.

Before ranting, just be sure that you know what you are talking about. There has been a lot of FUD recently about "Ubuntu spyware", mainly spread by people who don't like Ubuntu. It is just an Amazon search engine, after all, and is simple to remove if you don't want to see Amazon results.

If you like Unity but not the Amazon searches then simply remove the feature

sudo apt-get remove unity-lens-shopping

If you don't like Unity you can change the desktop.
None of the other desktops have the shopping lens. If you want a desktop similar that in 10.04

Code:

sudo apt-get install gnome-panel

Log out and back in selecting Gnome Classic as your desktop.

Ubuntu has better support than other Linux versions, simply because there are more users to ask but you are free to modify it however you want. Or try another distribution

It's up to you.

nah just official support was dropped (the lonely dev asssigned to it was reassigned to somehting else). meaning you can't call them and ask for support. though 12.04 is still supported.
However it will continue to be community project (like Xubuntu) and also i think the company behind netrunner will help to finance it.

You can turn off the amazon search simply by clicking on system settings and going to the "privacy" section...the button is turned on, simply turn it off! It's as easy as that...

As was mentioned, it is not spyware, and considering all the $ that Shuttleworth puts into ubuntu, you can't really blame him for wanting to try to make a little money back for it...

I think you will find raw debian to not be as nice an experience as ubuntu and ubuntu based distros are (no offense meant to the debian fans)....
