Angry Just updated 12.04 with recommended updates... massive meltdown

So I had a perfectly good running system this morning, now that I installed the recommended updates from Update Manager, my ATI driver is completely messed up (won't let me purge it, or reinstall it). Also, it says my package manager is broken

Any ideas? anyone else run into this after today’s update?

    ***UPDATE***
So I figured out so far that it's got something to do with a dependancy issue with my ATI Radeon graphics driver.

This is what I get when I try opening the software centre:

Then when I click repair, it tries for a bit and gives me this (full text below pic):

Ok, so I just fixed it. I had to force uninstall the ati driver by going to /user/share/ati and as root ran fglrx-uninstall.sh with --force in front of the normal ./fglrx-uninstall.sh

This forced the uninstall of the previous ati driver, and allowed me to reinstall and when I opened the software centre and clicked repair, it went smooth as silk

Note to self: Any updates to the kernel may mess up your proprietary graphics driver. Either don't upgrade the kernel, or plan for some down time to fix issues after upgrading the kernel. This applies to any proprietary driver: graphics, wireless, etc.

Wouldn't it be cool if there was a pop up warning saying "hey there sparky, if you install this update, be prepared to spend some time fixing your proprietary drivers"... I wonder, has there ever been an ubuntu kaizen event for the update process??

You should add this to the Ubuntu Brainstorm. This is a interesting topic that I think many people will promote.

I so agree with the idea of a some warning.. Last night an 'update' (if you can call it that) totally ruined a perfectly good install of 12.10 which was running the AMD 13.1 catalyst drivers.

Took me about 2 hours for the complete backup and reinstall.

Next time the little update thing flashes at me, I'll be very careful before accepting.
