FOSS = free, open-source software, and the open-source radeon driver is included with linux kernel and used by default. If you're using "Squeezy", then I'm guessing you have relatively old versions of the kernel/drm/mesa and other relevant components.
ah thank you for the clarification. I did not realize that FOSS was an acronym. That helps a lot.

I've been running Debian sid on my main box for several years. I used to post on Debian forums, but I prefer it here for the most part.
