    chess

I've downloaded many chess programs (crafty, stockfish, gnuchess, fruit, I even tried eleeye). I can't get any of them to work.

How can I get to play a simple game of chess on linux?

    PyChess works just fine here.

    Re: chess

I have the opposite problem. I can't find a chess program, that I can beat

Don't download them, install them from the Ubuntu repositories. Then you get versions that work.
    Code:
    sudo apt-get install gnuchess
will install a text mode application and
    Code:
    sudo apt-get install glchess
will install a graphical user interface.

I'm glad it works for you. You can change the settings in the Settings pull-down menu (of glchess)
