display dimming problem

I am new to ubuntu, I do not know what my problem is my screen dims every five seconds even if I am moving the mouse, it keeps dimming until I have a black screen, totally dark, I think it started since the last updates yesterday, I have read trhough the internet since yesterday but I still dont know what is triggering this, the screen brightness comes back when I press any key and starts dimming again in five seconds..
I am using ubuntu 12.10 I have hp 435.

Please don't create multiple threads on the same subject, I have merged your two threads.

Like I said in your email, it looks like you have a settings problem. Click the cog wheel in the upper right, and select system settings. Once system settings is open, select Power, and set the time before the screen dims.
