it's a hardware issue as far as i can tell.

i booted my computer last week and it blue screened, thinking the windows partitions went bad--as it does very often--i boot into ubuntu, it freezes as soon as i log in. i reboot, log into ubuntu again, same thing. i tried to reinstall ubuntu, and it seg-faults.

my chipset is an intel series 6, which falls under the massive recall that they are doing right now.

my question is, what causes a seg fault? ram? hard drive?
