The various BSD's are still alive and kicking...but I've always thought of them more as server OS's rather than suitable for everyday desktop use. I wonder how many people actually live in BSD full-time on the desktop.

Indeed. I've never known any personally who does, but I've known a few to tinker with it for fun.
Kinda related, debian is now a BSD distro as well as a linux distro, and the installed environment with bsd kernel is really quite similar to stock debian. If you haven't heard about it, look it up!
I'm looking forward to see what debian wheezy kfreebsd is like. In squeeze the FreeBSD kernel version was stable, but quirky at times. The advantage is that it brings familiar apt package management to BSD, along with the massive debian repos. Could prove to be a successful BSD distro in time, or at least an intermediate stepping stone between the two camps.
Understandably though, the version with the BSD kernel runs slower because the programs in it were optimized for Linux. This should improve somewhat over time, I think.

I was patiently waiting for PC-BSD 9 (and then 9.1) (because 8 rocked) but now the future of Radeon drivers for it hangs in the balance (especially proprietary ones) so I guess I will always only tinker with it in VBox...

DesktopBSD is actually being worked on again. The forums are back online, and they are looking for volunteers (project managers to start looking at code and a webmaster) to help with the revival of the project

Not much of a BSD person but I have been running ghostBSD on a VM and that one is not a bad desktop/user friendly.

i was stoked for that, but a trial installation failed miserably.
perhaps with some active involvement and after a few releases....
