    Talking gateway laptop customizing

Hello, Ubuntu Forum users and moderators! I need help. Again.
I am getting a very old gateway laptop. I have a 1TB SATA hard drive and an AMD X64 proccesor. Would i be able to replace the two components that are currently in there without any modification to the motherboard?

The chip socket must be compatible to the CPU,so first you have find out what mother board it is and weather it supports the CPU you want to use. The same is true with the hard-drive as far as sata connector compatibility is concerned.

Gateway like other manufacturers uses different vendors for mother boards. The other important question is weather the bios supports the hardware.

Gateway tends to stop updating the bios and drivers after a period of time so the new hardware would be useless on that particular computer without bios support.

Can't be that old with those specs. A simple RAM upgrade might give more of a performance boost than a newer cpu and would be cheaper. Why do you need more than a TB of storage on a laptop?
