Ubuntu 12.10 freeze after login

I have an Nvidia 8600 GT and I was getting freezes on wubi and LiveCD. I was able to finally stop it on live CD using "nouveau.blacklist=1" in the boot commands. I have added the same line to the boot commands of the installation to no avail, it keeps freezing up. I can log into CLI just fine and was able to install the nvidia-current drivers.
I then restarted, still freezing in GUI.
I used wget to download and install the Nvidia drivers from the nvidia website, still hangs up in GUI.

What else can I do? I'm going insane!

First the mouse goes, still shows the laser as active, then shortly after the keyboard becomes unresponsive
