    Abiword and 12.10 vs 12.10

    Hi,

Abiword is problematic in Lubuntu 12.04, but works well in 12.10 (same version, 2.9.2).

Surely this means that the problem lies in 12.04 rather than Abiword.

Don't think so. I found Abiword glitchey in 8o4 and 10o4. Havent tried it in 12o4.

I have also always found abiword lacking in many ways, right from Ubuntu 5.10 to the present 12.04, (not tried 12.10).

It is fine for a small letter or document of some kind, but if I try and import a document with 10s of pages and any unusual formatting it nearly always freezes and becomes unusable. I have never managed to get it to show any images in a document produced on another system or platform either, though that may simply be some setting in abiword that I've not yet found.

It's a great pity as it is so much faster than LO, but as I say, only for small documents.

Yes, now that you mention it, freezing was a big issue.

I always used Open office and then Libre Office. When I switched from Ubuntu to Lubuntu, Abiword was the default program of course and I just downloaded Libre Office. When 12.04 came out, I thought I would give Abiword a chance and I did. I even gave it a chance in Lubuntu 12.10. It is super fast but there are so many things that it cannot do that I am back to Libre Office. I have to accept a little slower for a lot more capabilities.

Re: Abiword and 12.10 vs 12.10

It seems Abiword is not well tuned in Ubuntu because the same versions always work great in Debian. So it was a frustration when I decided to install Ubuntu-12.04 on a new laptop: Abiword worked much faster than Open(Libre)Office on my old lowspec computer so I was quite used to it. But in Ubuntu it's just impossible to work with Abiword it simply crashes every now and then. Looks like developers don't bother very much about this application.

Canonical released a very early, and nearly unusable, testing version of Abiword in 12.04:

    http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=2004848

    It's total garbage!!!

    Look at these bug reports:

    https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+s...rd/+bug/960089

    https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+s...d/+bug/1019621

I'm Erick Brunzell at launchpad and I've tried like crazy to get that fixed but the devs either ignore me or tell me I'm not smart enough to follow the proper procedure

It's sad that we must continue shipping a broken package until April 2017

The best work-around I've found is to use the packages from this PPA:

    https://launchpad.net/~mrpouit/+arch...filter=precise

Or just upgrade to 12.10 ............. but it's not an LTS!

If you need help using the PPA please feel free to send me a PM

    Thanks for responding.

I have created a liveUSB in Lubuntu 12.10.

How long will it be supported?

    Happy New year.
