    Is it ok if I switch off my *own* computer?

    <windows>

    Ok I'm done I'll turn off the PC, I need some sleep.

    >>> The computer is downloading & installing updates.

    Jeez sorry, but I need some sleep.

    >>> Don't interrupt the updates.

    Ok, guess I'll have to wait until Windows decides I can turn off *my* PC.

    Another time:

    I'm in the middle of some work.

    >>> The updates are now installed. Restart your PC.

    But I'm busy, I'll just click on "Later."

    Later on - I'm still busy, the box pops up again:

    >>> You must restart your PC.

    Just go away, ok, I'm busy.

    A little later:

    >>> Restart your PC the updates have installed.

    Yessir!

    </windows>

    Actually I think windows is OK, I've needed it recently for my netbook as the CMOS battery has died - Linux won't run at all, but I'm able to use windows (dual-booted, it works as long as I set the time/date each time it starts.) But I've missed Linux.

    updating the windows is really a pain in the ***. it took me 3 hours to update a "never-updated" w7, really slow and counless reboots.
    needless to say that, after all birth-pains, an update failed to install.

    My question is: Why does every piece of Windows software want to install the stinking Yahoo or Google search bars in my browsers when installing or updating???

    I have my browsers just how I want them, please stop adding more utilities that will slow them down, M.S.Windows.

    ... or the ASK toolbar or any of a myriad of other toolbars that will supposedly make your experience wonderful but really only use up valuable screen real estate and add bloat?

    Never assume that information you find using a search engine is up-to-date.
