Download the file to your desktop. Right-click it and select Extract Here. Open a terminal and do:
    Code:
    cd Desktop/compat-drivers-2012-12-04
    sudo su
    ./scripts/driver-select rtlwifi
    make
    make install
    modprobe rtl8723ae
    exit

So I take it this is a bad thing

    Code:
    colin@Satellite-C850D:~$ cd Downloads/compat-drivers-2012-12-04
    colin@Satellite-C850D:~/Downloads/compat-drivers-2012-12-04$ sudo su

Re: No wireless after 12.10 installation

    ./scripts/driver-select rtwifi
    It's rtlwifi. Please start over:
    Code:
    ./scripts/driver-select restore
    ./scripts/driver-select rtlwifi
    make clean
    make
    make install
    modprobe rtl8723ae
    exit
Off for the evening. See you tomorrow.

Done, still no sign of the wireless. Here's the output from everything after make

Note: iwl4965 detected, we're going to disable it. If you would like to enable it later you can run:
        sudo iwl-load iwl4965

    Running iwl-enable iwlagn...
Disabling iwl4965 ...	[OK]	Module disabled:

    Now run:

sudo make unload to unload all: wireless, bluetooth and ethernet modules
sudo make wlunload to unload wireless modules
sudo make btunload to unload bluetooth modules

Run sudo modprobe driver-name to load your desired driver.
    If unsure reboot.

Note: iwl4965 detected, we're going to disable it.
    What explains this?

    Please post:
    Code:
    modinfo rtl8723ae | grep 8723
    iwconfig
    sudo iwlist wlan0 scan
    Thanks.

Re: No wireless after 12.10 installation

I have no idea what iwl4965 is I thought it was the previous driver.

Here is the readout you wanted

    Code:
    colin@Satellite-C850D:~$ modinfo rtl8723ae | grep 8723
    filename: /lib/modules/3.5.0-21-generic/updates/drivers/net/wireless/rtlwifi/rtl8723ae/rtl8723ae.ko
    firmware: rtlwifi/rtl8723aefw_B.bin
    firmware: rtlwifi/rtl8723aefw.bin
description: Realtek 8723E 802.11n PCI wireless
    alias: pci:v000010ECd00008723sv*sd*bc*sc*i*
    colin@Satellite-C850D:~$ iwconfig
    eth0 no wireless extensions.

    lo no wireless extensions.

    colin@Satellite-C850D:~$ sudo iwlist wlan0 scan
    [sudo] password for colin:
    wlan0 Interface doesn't support scanning.

Re: No wireless after 12.10 installation

Let's load the module and see if there are any complaints:
    Code:
    sudo modprobe rtl8723ae
    dmesg | grep rtl
    ls /etc/modprobe.d
    Thanks.
