When I try to install 'gnome-shell-extensions' I get this:

That was easily resolved by purging 'gnome-session-fallback'. I got logged into the new classic session, just now poking around.
For some reason gdm is eating my lunch, I might try 'lightdm' for a while just as a work-around.
