account settings in concurrent X sessions

After some trial and error, I've managed to get two user accounts running X in separate terminals. However, the second account has settings that are different than the first: The sound doesn't work, the fonts don't look as sharp, the corner drop-down menu is arranged differently. I assume I need to import a configuration file from somewhere or make other adjustment, but I have no idea where to start. I haven't been able to find any xinitrc files.

    Thanks.

[EDIT -- It turns out the problem isn't with the second login itself, but the fact that it uses a generic xfce-session rather than an xubuntu-session. However, I haven't figured out how to get startx with the xubuntu-session, and have posted a separate question about it.]
