    Will ubuntu work for me?

    All,

First thank you for taking your time to read this. Any help is greatly appricated. I currently am building a computer for myself. Without getting too in depth I have a ASUS P8Z77-v pro motherboard, 16 GB of ram, EVGA geforce gtx 560, and a 320 GB hard drive that will get changed out for a SSD. I will be picking up a Intel I5 3579K in another week. I was planning on running windows 7 but wont be able to pick it up for another month. With that being said can I download ubuntu to a disk and use it for my OS without having windows or another OS? I have never used another OS before and not sure how it will work with my current set-up that I have. Not sure if I can download the new drivers or not with it. If I can use it I may not even bother going to windows. The computer will be used mainly for searching the web, youtube from time to time and college work. May play a game from time to time but I dont have any computer games at the moment so the computer will be over kill for what I'm doing with it. Thanks.

    Short answer - Yes.

Just remember that Ubuntu != Windows and that it doesn't try to be either. If you are willing to learn how it works you will have a pleasant experience.

(Oh, and welcome to the forum).

I would Highly recommend giving Ubuntu a try.

Especially if there isn't any Windows Only program that you have to have.

And even if there where you could run Windows 7 in VirtualBox in order to use those Windows Only programs.

And as far as the occasional Games go maybe one of these Browser based Games might fit the bill...

In most cases you won't need to Download any new or additional Drivers because the Hardware is handled by the Linux Kernel.

And if you wanted or needed a Video Card Driver that would give you more options you could always install the NVIDIA Driver that is in the Ubuntu Software Center (See attached screenshot).

no idea and no one here can answer succinctly that it will. Everyones mileage varies, if it didnt the forum wouldnt exist

Give it a try, you can run it from a CD/DVD and Live USB to try it out, but you wont really know until you install it.

The forum is here if you get stuck or have issues.

Look up all your hardware and known issues if any in advance.

    Welcome to Linux.

    Peace

As above, It should be fine for you.
