Just wanted to +1 for the average amount, which seems to be about 20. Occaisonally I'll hit the 50-75 mark, 100 is a definitive upper limit.

Most of the time I open only about 6-10. I could hit the 100 mark easily (I reached 30-40 during a homework assignment), but I usually closes unused tabs after a while.
