Yes, I have set it to Times New Roman, Arial, and Courier New.

You guys must be mad.
Why should you want the pixelated, ugly-as-hell non-antialiased Windows-like fonts on a shiny Linux box with all fonts antialiased?
Sigh. I guess Microsoft poisoned people's aesthetic sense.
Well, at least with the crispy Windows fonts, I can stay more than half an hour in front of my computer
The default blurred fonts in Ubuntu hurt my eyes, and they don't look professional at all anyway. Monitors use pixels to show stuff, and if you take advantage of this, you can have something clear to the eyes (clear fonts, clean horizontal line, clean square, etc...).
The MS fonts are among the only ones that are hinted, why shouldn't we take advantage of them? It's so time-consuming to define hints to fonts...

Ok, here's an how-to that works fine in Gnome and Opera: http://digg.com/linux_unix/Display_M...ike_on_Windows

Ok, I finally found a solution. I updated my XML files, please go ahead and follow the original tutorial again. Now fonts in Firefox are going to look good, just like in Windows

OK, worked now!
i can't thank you enough for this awesome guide, believe it or not i was very satisfied with step 1 ALONE, may be because i copied the windows fonts before that from the administration panel.
Anyway, thanks a million
I find it funny that people think linux can do fonts anywhere near close to windows or OSX these days. Don't get me wrong - this is one of the main things keeping me from switching to linux for 100% of my workflow (I work in graphic design and the font rendering just isn't up to par), so I would LOVE for the fonts to be the same, but sorry, even in that screenshot they're completely and utterly miles apart in terms of quality.
Why do people honestly think they're similar?
The bytecode interpreter, when switched on, should, theoretically, produce pixel perfect reproductions of the original fonts. Also, kerning info is in pro fonts but freetype ignores it. There are millions of other things wrong with freetype, should I continue?
Seriously. Stop saying that you can have good fonts on linux, when it really happens, people will think you're crying wolf again.
