It seems that today is a stormy day here in 13.10. GS-PPA. Is is similar in 14.04?

I'm gonna lay_low for a few days. Too many things are in flux right now, e.g. everything is brittle and easily broken.

I'm going to take this opportunity to regroup -- clean the cruft out of my 'sources.list' -- and so forth, and so on -- basically prepare for proper 14.04 LTS testing.

It was fun figuring out the disappearing mouse pointer. I discovered 'unclutter' in the process.

    DESCRIPTION
unclutter removes the cursor image from the screen so that it does not
obstruct the area you are looking at after it has not moved for a given
time. It does not do this if the cursor is in the root window or a
button is down. It tries to ignore jitter (small movements due to
noise) if you have a mouse that twitches.
That's one of the joys of spending four days wracking your brain, trying to figure out a solution, you know?

I just said it was stormy, but nothing that a minute or less of thinking could not resolve. Experience gained here in U+1 comes as a good umbrella sometimes.
Unclutter went off my machine couple of cycles ago. You're all making me more and more impatient to embark on 14.04 but I'm stubborn this time playing with new Mesa and couple of other things that I do not have equivalent in PPAs for TT.

    You're proceeding wisely.

I shouldn't have been so impetuous -- caused me several days of grief.

Jury is still out on 'unclutter'. In a way, I like it, but it acts strangely when I'm scrolling with my mouse wheel. Maybe there's a setting that can be tweaked. If not, I'll probably dump it too...

Word „wisely“ is one of those words that I could not associate with me at any time in my life. Simply put, life threw some big stones towards my head these days and I'm just too preoccupied escaping them so...

I've felt much less clutter without unclutter. So...

Interesting that you found that plugin to be more of an issue in gnome world than the occasional problems it creates in ubuntu land.
Been an ongoing problem since 13.10 though not all the time -
    https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+s...n/+bug/1238410
I get rid of the plugin as haven't found what good it does other than this feature which doesn't matter much here

Forensics (if you will) is my favorite part of the +1 experience.

I enjoy watching the community discovering and solving problems and/or coming up with workarounds, et cetera.

You are the best, IMO. You're able to articulate problem(s), reduce it to 'paper' e.g. write out comprehensive bug reports, and effect change. You never fail to amaze...

This 'disappearing mouse pointer', in GS Staging, was particularly vexing for me, because it's almost impossible to navigate with a pointer-less mouse. Actually, I got so embroiled in figuring out how to navigate GS without a mouse, that I wasn't seeing the forest_for_the_trees. It totally broke my concentration.

An epiphany came about, when I focused on the lack of a pointer in GDM. Ultimately, the culprit was a simple plugin setting. Restoring the pointer on the desktop was an unexpected byproduct of fixing GDM -- call it dumb_luck.

I *think* this plugin setting was changed, during a recent upgrade, to accommodate touch screen users -- but, that's just a hunch.

Anyway, I finally got everything up n' running, albeit version 3.8.4-0ubuntu5...

    That'll do for now.

After I've licked my wounds, for a few days, I'll jump back into the fray and install GS Staging again.
