There is some kerfuffle with dist-upgrade... Any idea what is happening with flashback etc...?
    Code:
The following packages will be REMOVED:
      gnome-applets gnome-control-center-datetime gnome-panel
      gnome-session-flashback indicator-datetime libcamel-1.2-44 libebackend-1.2-6
      libecal-1.2-15 libedata-book-1.2-19 libedata-cal-1.2-20
      libedataserver-1.2-17 thunderbird-gnome-support
The following NEW packages will be installed:
      libcamel-1.2-45 libebackend-1.2-7 libecal-1.2-16 libedata-book-1.2-20
      libedata-cal-1.2-23 libedataserver-1.2-18
The following packages will be upgraded:
      evolution-data-server evolution-data-server-common evolution-data-server-uoa
      folks-common gir1.2-ebook-1.2 gir1.2-ebookcontacts-1.2
      gir1.2-edataserver-1.2 gnome-contacts gnome-shell gnome-shell-common
      libebook-1.2-14 libebook-contacts-1.2-0 libfolks-eds25 libfolks-telepathy25
      libfolks25 nautilus-sendto
16 upgraded, 6 newly installed, 12 to remove and 0 not upgraded.
Need to get 6,278 kB of archives.
After this operation, 452 kB of additional disk space will be used.
Do you want to continue [Y/n]? n
OK, I see lot of stuff is getting newer versions, but there is some stuff that I think I should keep... Am I wrong?

Yeah, I've been seeing that, the past 24 hours or so, too.

"Smart Upgrade", so called, wants to remove essential items. "Default Upgrade" is willing to do a partial upgrade.

Personally, I'm willing to do neither.

This is one of those times that I'll forgo upgrades, and wait for things to simmer down.

    Re: GNOME3 Staging PPA

There was/is a huge problem with the e-d-s packaging. Downgrade libebackend-1.2-6, libecal-1.2-15, libedata-cal-1.2-20 and libedataserver-1.2-17 to their 3.8.4 saucy versions while upgrading. This will resolve the e-d-s conflicts. Or you can go for with the removals and reinstall gnome-applets, gnome-control-center-datetime, gnome-panel, gnome-session-flashback and indicator-datetime. Sorry for those disruptions.

    Decided to take Door #2.

Downgrading libebackend-1.2-6, et cetera, would have stripped my install to bare-bones; apt-get wanted to remove 10's or 100's of core packages.

Wash, rinse, and restyle went well -- survived a cold boot.

Everything boot/loaded fine on Linux 3.12-rc1 mainline kernel / nouveau.

nVidia drivers still need to be patched for Linux 3.12 -- otherwise, all is back to normal.

    Thanks!
