Things are looking up! I was getting bored.
Shows much the same here. Ubuntu Tweak broken and same with sowtware center. The fun begins.

    Re: GNOME3 Staging PPA

I just updated to gnome-shell 3.9.1, and things seem to be working as they should, I don't have Unity installed on this system, so no problems there.

One thing I have found, if the systems goes into suspend, only the external monitor lights up when he system wakes up, my netbook screen stays black. I haven't bothered to look yet whether this is an early Saucy problem, or Gnome3.

Well, drat! False alarm. That was short-lived...

Unity is working fine, now. I just shelled right into it.

Must have been yet another example of bad timing.

I swear, for the past 12 hours, Unity was borked -- all I was seeing was a default blue Gnome wallpaper -- no panels -- no nothing. And, none of the usual tricks worked.

I did several incremental upgrades today. Something_or_another must have been missing earlier...

    Thanks!

Just did all the updates myself and did a cold boot after. Still no Unity for me. Freezes at the login screen but gnome3 staging is working good. Will look into more later.

Sorry! I should have stated that <the above> more clearly...

I still cannot log into a Unity session, the conventional way, using a Display Manager, e.g. via GDM/LightDM.

    However...

I can, once again, shell into Unity from a Gnome-Shell session, by replacing the DE via CLI.

    Here's the drill:

    • Boot
    • Log into a Gnome-Shell session via GDM.
    • Give GS a couple of minutes to fully load any/all shell scripts, extensions, et cetera.
    • Open a terminal and run:
      Code:
      unity --replace &
    • Unity will start replacing Gnome-Shell.
    • At some point, the DE replacement process will hang. This is normal.
    • Close the terminal, and the process will complete itself.

I might mention, this is how I've had to start Unity for months.

It was only recently that I could start a Unity session successfully, via the Display Manager.

Many Thanks. I can now get into Unity, video is a little screwy on exiting a program.

    Welcome!

It's a workaround, for sure, but it's better than nothing (literally)...

Unity on Saucy + GNOME3 PPAs

I believe I fixed that now for the GNOME3 Staging PPA by merging the Ubuntu changes to gnome-session into the PPA packaging. It should be possible to run Unity now on Saucy with the GNOME3 Staging PPA (for Raring) enabled.

I think the same work would need to be done to gnome-session in the regular GNOME3 PPA but I don't have the time to test it. The work should just be adding the new user session upstart file and updating debian/rules. It's a bit of an edge case anyway since Saucy uses logind but only the GNOME3 Staging PPA uses logind (the regular GNOME3 PPA does not) and we're hesitant to change that. It's more important for us to make sure regular Saucy works and that Raring works with or without the PPAs, whether users run Unity or GNOME. And I don't know if Unity needs an update for that upstart change too...

Thanks! I'll do an upgrade, and check back later.

I've been tracking a problem with Conky for 6 hours -- time for a break. LoL!
