    Re: GNOME3 Staging PPA

    Things are looking up...

    Ubuntu 13.04 / Linux 3.8-rc7 / Gnome-Shell 3.7.5 (Staging) / Plank / Conky / ACYL / Chromium Canary

Screensaver is working flawlessly, since I switched back to GDM.

Nautilus stopped crashing, when looking at file properties on remote servers.

Now, if 'they' can just get gnome-tweak-tool working. Looks like a python bug, to me.

Do anyone know how to install gnome-shell-search-provider-nautilus?
I don't get the documents/files in the shell search under nautilus, only folders.

By the way, I see 3.5.90 starts to flow in.

    Re: GNOME3 Staging PPA

Is it only me or is the menu with which to choose which session to start missing from GDM greeting screen?
Update₁:It is there but it changed behaviour, in order to use it I have to lie that I'm not the user offered on the screen and then I'm given the choice of user and of session...

    I just:
    • Logged in normally
    • Read your post
    • Did a daily incremental upgrade
    • Did a cold (re)boot, and
    • Logged in again

Sorry, but I didn't notice any difference in GDM behavior.

Happily, gnome-tweak-tool is back, but that's the only change I've noticed.

    Re: GNOME3 Staging PPA

Despite my past tribulations with NetworkManager, I'd like to try out the latest stable version, just released.

I'm aware neither PPA is likely to have it in the next 10 minutes, but I'm wondering what to do to get it "cleanly"? This staging PPA? Wait for it in the official GNOME3 PPA? Or will I just have to see if it's pulled into the official repos for raring?

Cole, the new NetworkManager will be uploaded to the regular raring repositories soon (I'm thinking we'll see it this week or next). The version there already is only a few weeks old and was an "unstable snapshot" leading up to NM 0.9.8.

FS: unique GDM package with new (as a matter of fact somehow old, was like that at one stage some time ago) behaviour...

    Re: GNOME3 Staging PPA

I've been switching back n' forth between GDM & LightDM.

GDM has been working flawlessly for me. In particular, I love the screensaver display (the one that appears after x minutes of disuse). It was a large digital clock in the middle, with large, animated chevrons pointing toward it, lovely background, volume buttons in the upper panel, blah, blah, blah. And, the desktop pops up immediately, when I tap the keyboard.

LightDM is the one that's giving me fits. Items in the upper panel are ghosted out (white on white colors). The custom wallpaper usually comes up in the login display, but not before flashing the 'monkey vomit' default wallpaper. Recovering from the screensaver is a crapshoot, et cetera.

GDM login screen is a class act, these days!

LightDM looks/acts like an amateurish hack, IMO.

    Re: GNOME3 Staging PPA

Would appreciate if someone could enlighten me what I did wrong (packages gratuitously uninstalled, etc.)

    • My Empathy starts up, but has no credentials. When I click account settings in the Empathy window Gnome Control Center pops up with the icon view, but there is only Gnome’s online accounts visible, the signond based one disappeared (g-c-c version 3.7.5 from gnome3-staging PPA). How’s this supposed to work nowadays?
    • Evolution 3.6 from main doesn’t start up with an error message that it can’t dinf some ecal widget
    • When I click "Network settings" in the GS network dropdown nothing happens
    • When I type "network" in the GS overview it only displays .desktop file entries of apps, but nothing from g-c-c (i.e., to reach the NM panel).
    • With nautilus drawing the desktop, when I go into the overview, nautilus fades away, together with the desktop wallpaper, and I have a land gray while the overview is showing.
