    No output on 2nd ATI card and fourth monitor

    First off, thanks to No-more-Restarts for giving me an outline of xorg.conf from scratch for my 4 monitor/2 video card setup.

    I followed his guide and replaced the sections with my system's info but I am still having issues. I think the issue is the ServerLayout section but I am not really for sure. I would appreciate it if someone could take a look at my issue.

    I am not really for sure what the Server layout values should be. Also, I am curious if DisplayPort-0 is the correct value on the xorg.conf as Catalyst identified it as 0-DFP7. I am not sure if the naming convention is different with the two different drivers but xorg shows them as:

    So I have been trying for about a week to get the xf86-video-ati (opensource ATI driver) to recognize my fourth monitor that is attatched to my 2nd ati card. The problem is the foss driver uses xorg's autodtect so I was trying to write an xorg.conf from scratch based upon the Catalyst xorg.conf. I have been playing around for days trying to get it to work but have not yet succeeded.

    My main video card, Radeon HD 6790, has four outputs (single-link dvi/dual-link dvi/hdmi/displayport). When I received my fourth monitor, I had problems getting the dual-link dvi to recognize my monitor. After researching, I realized that I could not use the dual-link port if I used the hdmi and displayport. This seemed to be a limitation of the hardware (and ATI's Catalyst driver) so I went and bought a cheaper Radeon 6450 to power my fourth monitor. I still had issues getting the monitor detected so I ended up manually ading the information to my xorg.conf and everything was fixed.

    Everything has been fine for about 5 months until I started having issues with the Catalyst driver and the latest xorg-server so I decided to try to setup and install the opensource driver, xf86-video-ati. Once again, the fourth monitor would not work so I started researching again. Well since the opensource driver uses Xorg's autodetection for setup, I could not just add the monitor/2nd video card's information to xorg.conf so I decided to try to write an xorg.conf from scratch. Well this did not go over well even though I once got the monitor to light up but it still wasnt functional.

    So a few minutes ago, I tried plugging the monitor into the fourth port on the main card. Well what do you know, it worked beautifully. I could not believe that the opensource driver now supported all four outputs on my Radeon 6790.

    Also whenever I started X, it had my monitors running as a clone of each other so I started messing around with xrandr to change the resolutions and location of the monitors. Xrandr is a console based application and I was having issues getting it to work so I installed an app called arandr which is like a gui version xrandr with output so you can see the underlying code. Arandr allows you to save the configuration file as xrandr.sh. So I just added that to my startup scripts in ~/.xinitrc and voila, I have a perfect setup as soon as I start X.

    I have a window's partition for gaming that keep the network disabled on except when I run the updates once a month. So I decided to reboot into windows to see if the monitor worked. Well sure enough, the Catalyst driver disabled my hdmi port since I was using both dvi ports. So I have to unplug the fourth monitor if I reboot into windows.

    It is pretty amazing that the open source ATI driver outperforms the proprietary Catalyst driver from ATI. Gotta love opensource!!!!!!!!!!!
