I just installed GNOME 3 (Ubuntu 12.10). Some websites talk about a sidebar (http://www.techrepublic.com/blog/fiv...ore-useful/583) but I don't have it. Clicking on my name on top right corner, there is such things as sidebar on the list.

I don't think the sidebar ever made it into Gnome Shell, it was just an idea they were playing around with at one point during development. I've been using Gnome Shell ever since it was released and I've never seen it.

If you have the shell installed it should appear as below when moving the cursor to the top left. Classic doesn't include it.
There is a dock extension also that displays favorite applications also but is not needed.

That's not the sidebar, that's the dash.

The sidebar was a feature that was in the early development builds of Gnome Shell and then dropped.

This is an OT comment I know but the left side "launcher bar" is called the "Launcher" in Unity but the "Dash" in Gnome-shell. The "Dash" in Unity is the search interface. Gnome-shell does not officially have a "Launcher" but when describing Ubuntu UI issues I usually use that term to describe the left-side launcher in both Gnome-shell and Unity because I find that less confusing then imposing conflicting ideas of what a dash is.
It is a shame Gnome-shell and Unity can't/couldn't get their terms to agree. I guess that applies for a few other Gnome-shell/Unity conflicts (e.g. middle [& control] click to open new windows, etc).

I think you're right. I'm running 3.6 and I have the dash of course. But the sidebar doesn't seem to be part of GNOME Shell anymore.
Nevertheless I am loving GNOME 3. Unity was so buggy. GNOME 3 is both stable and good looking. I hope it will be supported in future Ubuntu releases too.
